The naturalistic places

Wild, rugged, basic, the least publicized of the Aeolian islands is the island for those who love the sea, promenades and deep silence. In the ancient past it was called Phenicusa for the luxuriant vegetation of ferns and palms, it was inhabited since the third millennium BC, as proved by the prehistoric sites dating from the Bronze Age of Piana del Posto and Capo Graziano, where archaeological excavations have brought to light oval huts, indigenous production of pottery and fragments of Mycenaean and Cycladic pottery visible today at the Museum of Filicudi. The slopes and the slopes of the island are in large part steep and rocky. The coasts of Filicudi have uncommon beauty. There are slopes formed by terraces covered with forests of juniper till down to the sea. Here and there you can admire deep caves such as the Bue Marino, which takes its name from the Monk Seal (the last one was sighted on the island in 1935) and magnificent cliffs as la Canna  71 meters  above sea level high with on the top a statue of Our Lady of Magugnaga). Its many faces has fascinated sailors of all time. On the reef live the black lizard and several colonies of hawks. Often around the island you may spot dolphins and on the seabed were once caught red coral and sponges.

Where nature is protected

What is the most effective way to protect nature, to preserve it as intact and uncontaminated as possible? No doubt to protect it. Well, 70% of the territory of the island of Filicudi and protected by environmental laws that have allowed the establishment of a Reserve exclusively destinated to the development of nature in all its forms. In a Reserve are "untouchables" not only animals, Eleonora's falcon, buzzard, Aeolian Black Lizard (Podarcis raffonei, now seriously threatened), but also the plants (trees, flowers, and so on..), minerals, the sea and the air. In addition, the entire archipelago of the Aeolian Islands was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
